In 1968, Frank Porfily and his brother, Don, started their business ventures together. This included Don’s Irrigation Service and Porfily Bros Trucking. In 1970, they purchased Owens Freight Lines Inc. to expand their growing trucking business. In 1976, they sold their truck stop in Cottonwood California and their office in Klamath Falls, Oregon and centralized operations to Prineville, Oregon, where they purchased the local Ochoco Feed & Farm Supply store.
For the next two decades they ran trucks, the feed store, the ranch in Post, Oregon, subdivided property, built houses, built roads, and whatever other odd jobs came up that would earn them a buck. Their hard work ethic, sense of urgency, reliability day and night, and a “we can make it happen” attitude quickly made them the go to guys to get stuff done.
In 1994, Frank’s son, Scott Porfily, decided he wanted to be part of the family business. Scott’s passion was heavy equipment and excavation work. SMAF Construction LLC was formed between Scott and Frank. It started with just one backhoe and one dump truck and quickly grew into the predominant Central Oregon excavation company that it is today.
Frank and Don separated their businesses in 1995 as both of their kids worked their way into ownership roles and branched out into other businesses. Frank took the trucking company and Don took the feed store.
In 2000, Scott and Frank started SMAF Environmental LLC.
“We had a truck wreck and fuel spill on Mt. Hood and we had to hire an environmental clean up company out of Portland, Oregon to clean it up for us,” says Scott. “They showed up with a backhoe and a dump truck to do the clean up. We decided that this was something we could do ourselves and got the training and credentials needed to do the work.”
SMAF Environmental LLC began providing 24/7 emergency response and clean up services for many private & public companies, trucking companies, insurance companies, contractors, and local, state, & federal agencies.
Scott and Frank added SMAF Rents LLC to their companies in 2001. They filled a void in Prineville by renting heavy equipment, containers, and homeowner tools to the local market. It has since expanded beyond Prineville to serve homeowners, companies, and government agencies throughout Central Oregon.
In 2003, Western Heavy Haul Inc. & Porfily Ventures were formed by Scott and Frank. Western Heavy Haul was started in order to rebrand and become the main trucking-for-hire side of the companies. This consolidated trucking into one company, as it grew and expanded across the West Coast. Porfily Ventures was started as the land development company. They bought ground, did the excavation work, built the houses, and sold them.
In 2012, Scott and his brother Brian bought their parents, Frank and Alana, out of all the companies. They have continued to grow and expand them all still today.
In 2015, they bought Redmond Heavy Hauling LLC in Portland, Oregon. This was a great competitor and an opportunity to expand their area for the heavy specialized trucking side.
Four years later, they bought the heavy hauling side of Gresham Transfer Inc (GTI). They were another great competitor with a location in Wood Village, Oregon and Kent, Washington. This allowed them to expand their area and capabilities of the heavy specialized trucking side. They had also outgrown the Redmond Heavy Hauling yard in Portland and needed more space. GTI’s Wood Village yard allowed them a lot more room and a place to continue growing.
In 2024, they sold the Redmond Heavy Hauling LLC assets in Wood Village, Oregon and Kent, Washington to competitors. This consolidated all the operations back to one location, Prineville, Oregon, once again.
It has been with a 24/7 hard work ethic, a “we can make it happen” attitude, and a sense of urgency and reliability that the companies continue growing today.
“We strive to provide an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. It is to the credit of our employees and our customers that let us do what we love each and every day. Service, service, service is what we want our customers to know separates us from our competition,” - Scott.
